DESCRIPTION

Created in 1980, The Marumi Farmers Cooperative brings together three factories, one of which being Iriguini in Kenya’s Central Province. The Iriguini factory collates coffee from around 500 local smallholders who deliver approximately 145 metric tones of cherry annually.

Water is a scarce resource for the farmers in the region, who have to pump from the local river over 250m away, which has made recycling water key in the factory’s processing.

The rich volcanic soil paired with the high altitude of the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Range make for perfect coffee growing conditions. Limited rainfalls slow the maturing process of the cherries, which combined with the altitude results in complex and sweet cup profiles.
