Brazil 2018

Like many roasters Brazil is a major origin for us. The coffees from this part of the world have an often awkward reputation as lower grade commercial coffees used to bulk out blends. This can be true, but we believe that Brazil has a lot more to offer than just low grade commercial cups.

It’s often misunderstood that while Brazil is known for huge mega-estates, over 80% of Brazillian coffee farmers are farms of under 30ha or less. We think that it’s important to work with the full spread of Brazillian farmers, and take pride in providing market access not just to the large estates but to smaller farmers who use specialty to differentiate and compete with farms often 50 – 100 times larger than their own. Our partners at APAS  and Cocatrel Co-Operative help us in access to these producers and in ensuring that we can continue to deliver value to them through our partnerships.

In all our buying it’s vital to us to work with ecologically minded producers, and are proud to work with TWO separate winners of the Fazenda Sustentável prize for sustainable agriculture; the Daterra Estate, who won in 2015; and Fazenda Pinhal this years winner. Pinhal was successful in part because of the ASAS project which we support, rehabilitating tropical birds seized by the Brazilian government from the illegal pet trade for release back into the farm.
