Description
Description
Burka Coffee Estate, founded in 1899 near Arusha, Tanzania, was joined by the neighbouring Selian Estate in 1991. Coffee planting began in 1918, and the estates now host around 1.3 million shade-grown coffee trees. The farms are also home to 314 acres of forest and 250 acres of grassland.
The estate employs 200 permanent staff and up to 5,000 seasonal workers during harvest. Staff receive housing, 20% above-minimum wage, social security, union membership, and access to a credit union. They also focus heavily on healthcare, amenities and community events for their staff to ensure they retain their dedicated staff each season.
Burka’s coffees are renowned for their high quality and backed by generations of agronomic expertise. This coffee is well balanced with flavour notes of malic fruit like green apples, and the syrupy sweetness of maple syrup and golden raisins.
