Description
Description
At 1800 masl in the Rwenzori foothills, Mahango is home to smallholder farmers, many growing coffee at even higher elevations. Most farms are just 1–2 acres, with coffee as the main crop. To support them, our import partner Agri Evolve established a local buying centre where farmers bring ripe, red cherries daily during harvest. Cherries are weighed, quality-checked, and farmers are paid in cash encouraging careful harvesting and consistent quality.
The cherries are then transported to Nyabirongo Coffee Station. Here, they’re floated to remove defects, hand-graded, and sun-dried on raised beds. The cherries are turned regularly to ensure even drying and to allow the sugars and flavours to fully develop.
Thanks to the altitude, careful processing, and traditional sun-drying, the resulting coffee has a vibrant, fruity flavour profile – A tropical passionfruit like acidity, sweet vibrant chocolate covered strawberry and a floral citrus characteristic that reminds us of hops.
