DESCRIPTION

Coffee in Uganda is the major crop making up a large percentage of the country’s total exports. Previously known for their Robusta production, the rising demand for speciality Arabica beans has increased the price of coffee, resulting in higher wages for the farmers creating a huge incentive to constantly improve the quality of coffee produced in this region. Agri Evolve, our import partner, is an agricultural social enterprise that collaborates with farmers across the Rwenzori region. Their primary goals are to enhance yields, increase profits, and improve lives. They ensure a reliable market by offering fair prices and prompt payments to the farmers.

Kiraro is a community at the Southern end of the Rwenzori Mountains, in the far West of Uganda, close to the border of the Democratic Republic of  Congo. It is a densely populated area with many smallholder farmers. The local farmers bring their cherries to the Agri Evolve buying centre where an Agri Evolve partner weighs the cherries and pays them in cash. The cherries are collected by truck on a daily basis and are taken to their coffee station at Nyabirongo for drying and processing.

This is a fantastic example of high quality Ugandan coffee. The long natural drying imparts complex ripe Blueberry notes. This is balanced out by sweet chocolate and cooking spices that remind us of clove.
